Silent Book Club – The silent reading circle is now also in Kotka

30.09.2024 | Silent Book Club Kotka meets once a month at Kotka Main Library on Saturdays from 13-14. The autumn meetings are on 5.10., 9.11. and 14.12. The location is Katariina’s Chamber on the 3rd floor of Kotka Main Library. The event is free of charge and the space is accessible.

The Silent Book Club is a reading circle where readers gather to read and enjoy silence with other people interested in reading. Everyone can read in their own time, even if they are together.

In Kotka, the Silent Book Club is led by a library employee. In Finland, there are also many reading circles set up by keen readers who meet in cafés or bars. Everyone brings a book they want to read to the reading circle. The book can be an e-book or an audio book as well as a traditional paper book. The only sounds in the room come from turning the pages and finding a comfortable reading position. After an hour of reading time, the reading circle leader rings the bell and the free meeting is over.
Participants can share their experiences of the books they have read, continue reading or leave. There is no obligation to talk, which is why this kind of reading circle is said to be an introvert’s happy hour!
