Over 4,500 primary applicants to Xamk

28.3.2025 | In the recently concluded spring joint application, South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) received 4,548 primary applicants. In total, there were 10,976 applicants. The overall attractiveness ratio, i.e., the number of primary applications per available study place, was 2.2 – nearly the same as last year.

The highest number of primary applicants to Xamk came from Uusimaa, approximately 26%. The next highest numbers came from Kymenlaakso, about 19%, and South Savo, around 12%.

Business degree programs attract applicants

Among bachelor’s degree programs, the most popular were the online business administration programs. For several consecutive years, the most attractive program has been the Information Systems program. The second most popular was the Business Administration program.

The next most popular programs were the multi-modal Forestry program in Mikkeli, the Cybersecurity Engineering program offered as full-time studies in Kotka, and the Security Management program in Savonlinna, conducted in a blended-learning format.

HR, Communication, and Leadership YAMK program most popular

Among master’s degree programs, the most attractive was also a business administration program. The most sought-after program was the HR, Communication, and Leadership master’s degree in business administration (YAMK).

Other top five master’s degree programs included Cybersecurity, Information Management and Digital Archiving, Development and Leadership in Youth Education, and the Sexual Health Specialist program. All of these programs are conducted online, except for the Sexual Health Specialist program, which is offered in a blended-learning format in Mikkeli.

Xamk’s Vice Rector and Director of Education, Katri Ryttyläinen-Korhonen, is pleased with the results.
“The attractiveness in the spring application has remained at about the same level in recent years, even as the number of study places has increased annually. In this spring’s application, Xamk had the third-highest number of available study places among all universities of applied sciences. Online studies continue to be highly attractive, but campus-based programs also generate significant interest. For example, the Cybersecurity program in Kotka, the Forestry multi-modal program in Mikkeli, and the Security Management program in Savonlinna were particularly popular this year,” Ryttyläinen-Korhonen states.

Nationwide, 148,000 applicants applied to universities of applied sciences and universities. Of these, 43% applied solely to universities of applied sciences, 42% applied only to universities, and the remaining 15% applied to both. Among universities of applied sciences, Xamk was the 11th most attractive in the spring application.

In the spring application, Xamk offered a total of 2,081 study places. The results of student selections will be published at different times depending on the selection method. The names of those admitted based on their certificates for bachelor’s degree programs will be published no later than May 26. The results of the AMK entrance exam, as well as the selection exams for specific programs and other admission methods, will be announced by July 3 at the latest. Studies will begin in August–September 2025.
