Krista Tervo Named Kymenlaakso Athlete of the Year 2024

3.2.2025 | Hammer thrower Krista Tervo, representing Karhulan Katajaiset, has been named Kymenlaakso’s Athlete of the Year 2024.

Her coach, Jukka Vihtonen, accepted the award on her behalf at the Kymenlaakso Sports Gala held at Satama Arena in Kotka on Friday.

Last summer, Tervo set a new Finnish record and placed sixth in the women’s hammer throw at the Paris Olympics.

Jukka Vihtonen, Tervo’s coach from Kotka, was named Coach of the Year at the gala.

The Young Athlete of the Year in Kymenlaakso for 2024 is also from Kotka—powerlifter Juuli Kostian, who won gold at the World, European, and Finnish Championships.

Hannu Vuorinen from Karhulan Katajaiset was honored as Sports Club Official of the Year. Vuorinen has been advancing the club for decades, first as an athlete and then for over 40 years in various club roles, including vice-chairman and chairman.

KTP Basketball was awarded as Youth Sports Club of the Year 2024 in Kymenlaakso, with its U16 and U17 boys’ teams winning national championships.
