Kotka involved in climate change adaptation work – EU funding for Kymenlaakso

10.10.2024 | Kymenlaakso has received EU funding to prepare a comprehensive climate change adaptation plan. The main partner in the Pact4Resilience project is the Kymenlaakso Regional Council, with the cities of Kotka, Kouvola and Hamina and other key actors in Kymenlaakso, such as the Kymenlaakso Welfare Region, the Regional Development Centre of South-East Finland and the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke).

Kymenlaakso was awarded €210,000 funding from the Pathways2Resilience Horizon project, which will use the methods developed to develop an adaptation plan. The funded regions will test the adaptation plan’s stepping stones. The aim is to take into account vulnerable groups, the importance of nature for people and society, and to identify sources of funding for adaptation measures.

Climate change will have an impact on almost all aspects of society. Climate change affects the built environment, health and well-being, agriculture and forestry, logistics, the state of water bodies and the economic planning of public actors.
The City of Kotka is contributing to preparing for the challenges ahead, and this is why a wide range of our experts from different sectors are involved in this project. In Kymenlaakso, we are already pioneers in adapting to climate change, as Climate Resilient Kymenlaakso was the first regional adaptation plan in Finland in 2022. Now this plan is being updated to be more comprehensive and detailed.

The Pact4Resilience project aims to help Kotka and other municipalities in Kymenlaakso and public actors anticipate the challenges of a changing climate and strengthen their resilience. By being prepared and proactive, Kymenlaakso can avoid the worst threats of climate change.
