Fire and trapeze – a diverse programme takes over the city at Aaltoja festival!

2.10.2024 | Aaltoja! The Kotka Festival of Light and Sound will take place from 16-19 October in different parts of the city.
The main focus of the festival will be light and sound works, but there will also be a varied programme of other events. The festival does not have a separate programme, but there will be performances and events at various venues along the route and in the city, organised by Kotka’s cultural and event services and other organisations.

The opening day of the festival on Wednesday 16 October will see two spectacular shows, when the fire duo Tuluxxia will amaze at 19:00 and 20:30 in Kantasatama. On Wednesday, there will also be a programme at Kotka City Theatre, where you can go shopping at the costume flea market and take a break from poetry. On Thursday, for example, you can relax with a sound bath at the OmaSp branch or visit the open doors of St Nicholas Church.

On Friday, the Vellamo canopy will be taken over by RAErave, where the world of underground rave meets dance art in an experimental and interdisciplinary performance. In Sibelius Park, on the other hand, the LED flow performance will delight at 20:00 and the light juggler and light figure from the circus school Rainbow will be seen on the art trail. On Friday at 18:00, the Kotka Market Square will also host the most positive person in Kotka award. On Thursday and Friday, the traditional light characters of the dance group MOVE will also be on the route of works.

On Saturday, the programme includes the enchanting “Story of the Sea” ring trapeze show in Kantasatama at 19:00. At 20:00 there will be fire art on the steps of the old hospital and at 21:00 on the Tori stage in the Market Square, a performing arts ensemble including acrobatics and contemporary dance, “Towards the Light”. On Saturday, the entertainment on the route will continue with light performers from the Rainbow Circus School. The Kotka Market Square food market with its various stalls will be open throughout the event.

During the week of the event, there will also be events in Sunila, Kyminlinna moats and Kymi church.
In Kymi Church, the work Lux orandi – Light of Prayer will be on show, and the programme will include prayer grids. Sunila, on the other hand, will host an open-air concert by the metal band Of Spite on Friday at 19:00 in front of Alvariska.
Sunila will also host the light works All at Home and the Aino and Alvar video installation on Friday and Saturday. Kyminlinna’s ramparts will also ring out again, and in addition to the magnificent Kyminlinna Kajo 3 lightwork, visitors will be served by Café Kajo.
