Sibelius Park returns as a work of art – Waves! The 2024 Festival route has been published

12.9.2024 | Waves! Light and Sound Kotka City Festival will take place from 16-19 October. The festival will run in the evenings on Wednesday and Thursday from 18-21 and on Friday and Saturday from 18-22.The centrepiece of the event will be an annually changing route of light and sound works, the destinations of which and some of the works have now been published.

As usual, the Waves! art trail starts at the Haukkavuori observation tower. This year, the artwork on the tower will feature the handprint of the Kotka Lyceum students. The work, created by artist Niko Tiainen, will be based on material worked on in the autumn together with the Lyceum Art Group.

The route continues from the observation tower to the old hospital in Kotkansaari, where the work Waves bow down before the shore by Anu Välitalo and Arttu Tolonen will be seen and heard. From the hospital, the route goes to the courtyard of the Concert Hall, which last year attracted much admiration, where this autumn the route will dive below the surface. Hans Lindqvist is responsible for the realisation of the work.

The new work will be in the Arcus building at Kotka Lyceum, where Ainu Palmu’s enchanting pink work Pink Caravan will be reflected on the wall. From the Lyceum, the route leads to Sibelius Park, which will return as the site of the work. The park houses a collection of works by the Kotka-based artist group Unformatted, God’s ways, and the impressive work Oumua by the Austrian Leo Bettinelli and Circus Lumineszenz. The Kotka City Theatre will also be present with its own work and the Friends of St Nicholas Church will once again light up St Nicholas Church.

The Waves! market, located on Lehmuskuja, moves to Kauppatori. At the market you can also admire one of the main attractions of the event – Kotka City Hall. From the heartbeat of the market, the visitors will go on a space trip to the courtyard of the Kotka Children’s Cultural Centre Laivuri. The Children’s Cultural Centre is designed primarily for the youngest members of the family, but older visitors are also welcome. From Laivurinkatu the route continues to Kantasatama, where you can admire Niko Tiainen’s work Lepidoptera, which glows in the water.

Light art will also be on display at the Karhuvuori Sports Hall, which will be the remote destination for the event. The rest of the programme and final details of the works will be published later at aaltojafestivaali.fi
