Moominpappa and Moominmamma rowing nets. Tove Jansson. From Moominpappa and the Sea (1965).

3.3.2025 | Knowledge Treat: “Her own storm was always the worst.” Moomin characters’ views on the sea, adventure, and happiness at Maritime Centre Vellamo on Wednesday, March 12 at 17:00.
PhD and nonfiction author Sirke Happonen will discuss the Moomin characters’ different attitudes towards life and their relationship with nature, weather, and adventure. While one character values simply being, another’s existence is defined by activity, and a third by creative work. What aspects of Tove Jansson’s own artistic and nature philosophy are highlighted in the Courage, Love, Freedom! exhibition at the Finnish Maritime Museum?
The event is open to all and free of charge. The lecture can be followed on-site in the auditorium of Maritime Centre Vellamo, and it will also be live-streamed. The streaming link will be published on the event’s page on Vellamo’s website. A recording will be available for two weeks on Vellamo’s YouTube channel.
